As part of their castle topic, Year 1 had a special visitor, ‘Sir Teachalot’ a knight from medieval times. He showed the children lots of armour including chainmail, swords, shields and helmets. After break they tried their hands at jousting; sitting on their trusty steed, lance in hand they had to hook three hoops onto their lance. In the afternoon they learned how to build a castle from the inside out, with words like keep, crenulations, portcullis, arrow slits and murder holes – the children used bricks to show the different parts. Firing a trebuchet to knock the castle down was probably the highlight of the day! Despite several children and teachers being killed throughout the day, (not really!) Year 1 had a splendid time.
