Pupils in the Prep School have been busy reading and ‘quizzing’ as part of the Accelerated Reader scheme and Reading for Pleasure.
All of the pupils in Years 5-8 are working towards becoming a ‘Word Millionaire’. The Accelerated Reader (AR) Word Millionaire programme promotes reading independently and gives students a range of books to read for their ability. By reading and completing quizzes on each book pupils can climb the levels and increase their word count. Becoming an AR Word Millionaire is a phenomenal achievement and something to be extremely proud of.
This week we were able to add lots more pupils to the Reading Wall of Fame! Congratulations to our eight new ‘Word Millionaires’ whose names will join the ten previous winners on the notice board in the Queen’s Building.
The benefits of reading for pleasure are substantial. Reading regularly helps pupils to extend their vocabulary, increases their ability to concentrate for extended periods of time, improves their chances of academic success and encourages pupils to develop a love of reading that will hopefully last a lifetime. It is so important that pupils are encouraged to develop positive reading habits. We are already seeing the positive impact of the scheme across the Prep school, and the Library is busier than ever!
Our Lambrook weekly Bookclub, which takes place in the Library on a Thursday lunchtime, is also proving rather popular, and is providing pupils with many opportunities to discuss and review books that might not necessarily be their usual book or author of choice.
During Saturday English Lessons, pupils have the chance to read for pleasure and catch up on their online quizzing of the book that they have just read. It has been wonderful to see how enthusiastically the pupils have embraced reading this term and to hear them recommending books to each other. Hopefully, they will find the time to continue with their reading during half term ready to quiz on their return to school! If your child is looking for something new to read, please do visit the www.arbookfind.co.uk where they can search for books with quizzes.
